Hi Jenny! I’ve been following you on Instagram via @jennytanzilli and I’m thrilled to chat with you? Please tell me, how long have you been in the hair care business and what inspired you to join this industry?
I’ve always known I was going to be a hairstylist from a young age. I started right after high school and have been in love with hair ever since! So it’s been 18 years.
With 18 years of experience, that definitely says a lot! You work at a boutique salon in Marina Del Rey, California — Marina Beach Hair — what are some of the hair trends you’re asked to do the most?
In regards to hair trends, I’m glad to see that it’s changed from bold highlights to beachy balayage — one of my favorites and what I’m asked to so the most!
I have to agree with you, I love beachy balayage color as well. It’s has just the right tones to make the hair look sun kissed. So would you say you specialize in color, cut or style and what is your signature style?
I specialize in blended beach girl hair from the blended balayage complemented but my signature beach girl textured long layers. Everything I do is designed to grow out gracefully with no line of demarcation. I want to enhance my clients’ natural beauty and leave them with a look that will look good now and in months to come.
That’s what I love about your color work, it looks natural! So, after you color the hair, what products do you finish off the styles with and what brand of styling tools are your go-to?
I like to finish my clients with IGK or Paul Mitchell styling products and wand their hair with Drybar tools for an effortless lived in look.
I absolutely love Paul Mitchell’s product line. Every product I’ve used has been great and I especially love using the Neuro Prime Heat Protectant, which has also been recommended by several other A-list stylists I’ve spoken to. As a matter of fact, I’m glad that you mentioned Drybar tools; I can’t live without their Tiny Tress Press Detailing Iron when I travel because it’s compact and works like a regular-sized flat iron. Now, as for color, which hair-dye brands are your favorite and why?
As for color I like Paul Mitchell, Redken, and Joico products to ensure quality results every time!
Those are all amazing brands I must say. In fact, Paul Mitchell’s Color Protect Shampoo is highly rated on Amazon and really helps to keep color looking fresh, and Redken’s All Soft Argan Oil is a great finisher for color-treated hair. So, I have to know, what is your number one hair care tip or warning?
My best hair care tip is to use Olaplex Step 3 at home between color services to keep your bonds strong! Also a good trim every 8 to 12 weeks for long hair is key.
I like that you mention the need to trim hair at least every three months, that’s super important. After trimming my hair, I like to use extra potent biotin, because it helps me grow my hair back stronger and healthier than before. Since you’ve been in the game for 18 years, what certifications do you hold?
I am a certified cut and color specialist with Paul Mitchell, Vidal Sassoon, Pravana and Aveda.
Wow, that’s really impressive! Okay, before I let you go, what can we expect to see in the future from you?
In the future I’d like to do more classes and maybe have my own salon!
Cheers to that! Given your expertise in balayage and natural tones, I’m confident your classes will be fully booked each time!
