1) Genetics

Human genetics plays a huge role in our biological makeup, from the color of our eyes to the shape of our body and even the texture and color of our hair. For the most part, we tend to have similar physical traits to our parents. So if your mom has thick, curly hair, chances are that you will probably have thick, curly hair. If you’re a man, and baldness runs in your family, chances are you may experience it too.

2) Hormones

Throughout our lifetime, hormones will play a significant role in the changes to our body and hair. From the time we’re born, through adolescence and adulthood, hormones will affect just about everything. As a baby, hair color and texture almost definitely will change as we age. During puberty, the human body will produce greater amounts of hormones causing hair to grow in places they didn’t before. During adulthood, hormones typically level-out and changes to hair growth and texture are minimal. However, during pregnancy or menopause, change in hormones can cause pregnant women to experience hair growing thicker and shinier, and during menopause women report experiencing thinning of hair and lack of moisture.

3) Medical Conditions

The look and feel of hair can change as a result of medical conditions and their required treatment(s). For example, cancer patients often lose hair because of chemotherapy and radiation. Other medical conditions that can prompt changes to hair are hypothyroidism, alopecia, dermatitis and vitamin deficiencies.

4) Stress

Most people don’t realize how stress can negatively impact the body. For example, stress can cause significant weight gain or weight loss, skin rashes, and changes to the hair. The effects that stress has on the hair can range from thinning hair and hair loss to reduced melanin production, causing hair to prematurely turn gray. It’s important to learn how to manage stress effectively so that you stay in good health.

5) Chemicals

For anyone who regularly colors, perms or bleaches their hair, it should come as no surprise that these treatments affect hair’s elasticity and vitality. Adding curling and straightening treatments also affects hair texture and growth. As we age, it’s understandable to color hair to hide the grays from showing, however, the best treatment for hair is no treatment at all. If you’re able to allow your hair to grow naturally without adding chemicals to it, your hair will grow better and shine like a star.

6) Environmental

Where you live can have a tremendous impact on your hair and your skin. For instance, the humidity level in the air in tropical areas can make your hair frizzy and oily. While areas that are cooler can make your hair dry or keep it at its normal state.
