Nursing Damaged, Dry Hair Back to a Healthy Shine

dry hair productHaving dry hair is a clear indication that your scalp and strands are not getting enough moisture.

There is a saying, “a woman’s beauty lies within her hair,” and in many cultures the presentation of her hair is everything.

As a young, naive teenager, I began to highlight my never-been-touched “virgin” hair. Needless to say, my hair was extremely damaged, the ends of my hair felt like the bristles on a broom. It took me several years to perfect an effective system and this is what I came to realize.

Proven Process to Make Dry Hair Healthy Again

Hair grows half an inch every month, that’s six inches every year. My hair is longer than two feet, so growing out long, damaged hair takes time but for those of you ladies whose hair is shorter than mine, you could nurse your hair back within a year or two.

Human hair requires hydration and this occurs naturally through the emission of vital natural oils our scalp produces. Try to,

  • Comb your hair instead of brushing. Brushes often cause more breakage. Combing your hair regularly facilitates the distribution of oil evenly throughout your hair, producing a greater shine. Comb-drying your hair will also make your hair dry straighter.
    • Use combs made from wood or bamboo and bone (not resin).
  • Saturate your hair with natural oils such as amla– or coconut-oil. For best results, do this at least once a month and leave the oil in your hair overnight.
    • These products are less than $10 at any local East-Indian grocery or GNC.
  • Use lukewarm- to cold-water when washing and rinsing your hair. This ensures less breakage. I also changed my routine by conditioning my hair first then using shampoo, washing out any residue the conditioner may leave in the hair.
  • Use detangler-spray and leave-in conditioner. Detanglers instantly break away knots and leave-in conditioners hydrate damaged ends, adding extra shine.
    • I use Johnson’s and Johnson’s detangler and leave-in conditioner.

Since hair requires hydration, try to avoid,

  • Heat-activated straightening and curling equipment. This includes hair dryers. They literally fry your hair.
  • Excess coloring and bleaching. This dries out your hair and changes its texture because you are stripping your hair of its nutrients.
