I can’t even begin to tell you all how amazing the La Catrina makeup ideas and Day of the Dead costumes on Instagram are — they’re absolutely stunning!
Truth is, this popularized Halloween costume has Mexican roots. Its history is based on folk art and culture.
The gorgeous skeletonized face of a beautiful woman with a very vibrant, floral headband that you most often see is La Catrina.
And, she has an interesting background story.
Created by Mexican cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada, the female skeleton face was originally called “La Calavera Garbancera.” Interestingly, this word originated from the poor chickpea sellers who were pretending to be rich.
Because they wanted to hide their indigenous roots, the chickpea sellers stopped selling corn and began to sell chickpeas instead.
Denying their own race, as well as their indigenous heritage and culture, the chickpea sellers pretended to be Europeans so they could earn more money and gain social status.
Later, it was Diego Rivera who named the skeleton, Catrina (referred to in Spanish as La Catrina).
As time went by, this iconic Mexican character grew in popularity and she was catapulted into a global sensation.

La Catrina Makeup Ideas for Halloween
One of my favorite cultural festivities is the Day of the Dead.
Indeed, the thought of death can sometimes be scary, but the tradition of Dia De Muertos in Mexico is centered around celebration. In fact, it’s a time to replace mourning with the celebration of life.
For the Mexican people, the holiday is about remembering their cultural roots and keeping their rich history alive. This holiday is bountiful with meaning and because of that — I love it!
Additionally, the La Catrina makeup and Dia De Muertos costumes you see on November 1st are an expression of cultural pride and peace at the end of life.
To that point, what would YOU put on your Day of the Dead altar?
