Hair Extensions: Quality and Price Explained

hair extensions

Did you know that not all hair extensions are made the same? Maybe you’re thinking hair is hair, but it’s actually not.

Chances are, if you’re not a stylist or hair influencer, then you may not know the differences off hand.

Truth is, there are many different types of hair available on the market. Knowing what is what will help you know exactly what you are buying and understand the value attached to it.

Now, before we discuss the four different types of hair extensions a little more in depth, I want to clear up a couple of misconceptions.

For example, raw donor hair and Remy hair are 100% human hair. The only difference between the two is the process each undergoes.

Another misconception is that all raw hair for extensions comes from India only.

In reality, while India is a major source of raw hair exported throughout the world, the hair also comes from other Asian countries, as well as several South American countries too.

4 Types of Hair Extensions

1) Raw Donor Hair

The most expensive and luxurious hair available, virgin hair (also called raw donor hair), is cut only from one donor. It is unprocessed, meaning it has not been chemically treated or heated, and has only been washed, disinfected, dried, and weft.

Available in two textures — straight and wavy — hair extensions made from raw donor hair can last up to 10 years with proper maintenance and care. They are imported mainly from India, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

2) Remy Hair

Less expensive than raw hair and relatively affordable, Remy hair extensions are made from human ponytail hair cut from one or more donors. Plus, they undergo color treatment as well as heat processing.

For instance, they can be styled into soft beach waves, kinky curls… just name it! To add to that, they come in different grades depending on their level of processing and durability (i.e. Grade 7a, 8a, 9a, 10a, etc.).

3) Hair Blends

Hair blends are extensions that contain a mixture of human hair and synthetic hair. As far as longevity is concerned, they do not last long and are also prone to tangle.

When it comes to price, they’re relatively affordable especially in comparison to hair extensions made from raw hairs. These are ideal for short-term use.

4) Synthetic Hair

The cheapest hair extensions on the market — synthetic hair — are made from plastic fibers and are typically coated with silicon to mimic the look of healthy, shiny hair

Synthetic hair fades in color, tangles quickly, and cannot be colored. As a matter of fact, they usually come pre-styled. Therefore, they only last for a period of six months or less depending on the quality.
