The 5 Must-Knows About Going Blonde

There’s something so fun and carefree about blonde hair. Unfortunately, my dark features would clash terribly with blonde hair. Maybe if I had Kim Kardashian’s talented colorist, but even then, I prefer a low maintenance hair care regime.

Anyhow, I was chatting with a friend the other day, and she mentioned how difficult it is to maintain her platinum blonde locks. So I figured I’d share the top five takeaways from that conversation.

1) TRUST THE EXPERTS: When it comes to going blonde, it’s imperative to have a professional craft your new look and it is even more important to avoid doing it yourself at home. Colorists have the expertise needed to assess the integrity of your hair and how much lightening it can handle.

2) THERE WILL BE SOME DAMAGE: Don’t kid yourself, there will be damage. However, to ensure minimal damage, make sure your colorist uses a bond rebuilder like Protection Cheveux Complexe by La Biosthétique. 3) IT’S A PROCESS: You have to be realistic, going blonde or finding the perfect shade of blonde take time. There is no magic serum that can make your hair color go from dark to light at the snap of your fingers, and for natural brunettes, it can take a few trips to the salon before the color is perfect. It takes even longer for clients with color build up. Plus, doing it all in one day is a major no-no among colorists because it puts too much stress on the hair.

4) THE TEXTURE OF YOUR HAIR MIGHT CHANGE: Be aware, your hair will lose elasticity and become straighter. It will also lose its natural shine and become coarse. On the plus side, fine hair will look voluminous as a result of using a bleaching agent.

5) IT’S HIGH MAINTENANCE: Make sure to pencil into your calendar visits to the salon every four to eight weeks depending on your colorist’s technique. If you are a wash and go and minimal products kind of gal, then going blonde may not be best for you. You’ll need to develop a home care routine for your hair based on your colorist’s recommendation.
