Veronique! I’m so excited to chat with you! I’ve been following you on Instagram via @bememiek for a while and besides loving your layout, I absolutely love your work. Tell me, how long have you been in the hair care business and what inspired you to join this industry?
I have been in the hair care business for 15 years now and I guess I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser even before I knew what a hairdresser was. I used to give my Barbie dolls a new look while using my mom’s colored mascara. Instead of those gorgeous long blonde Barbie locks, my dolls where rocking undercuts, green hair and lots of glitter. I was around eight years old at the time and I thought I was doing my dolls a favor, I now know I truly wasn’t…sorry mom!
Ha-ha, I love that you gave your Barbie dolls undercuts, green hair and lots of glitter, that’s a sign of a true creative genius. By the way, I know you recently opened your salon located at Dr. Poelsstraat 14, 6336TS Hulsberg in the Netherlands, congratulations! That’s a huge accomplishment. What are some of the hair trends you’re asked to do the most and what is your signature hairstyle?
I can’t say there is a specific hairstyle I get asked to do most. I love to create all kinds of beautiful looks. I strive to always create a ‘signature’ hairstyle for everyone who sits in my chair. I love to create looks that match my guests’ personality and bring out that extra spark inside of them. So maybe that’s my signature look — “bringing out that extra spark” look.
Oh, I love that. Everyone has their own signature style so it’s great you tailor their hairstyle to their overall look. So would you say you specialize in color, cut or style?
Through the years I specialized in color. I love to mix personalized recipes for every guest. Last year I participated in the Masterstylist Program, educated by Goldwell Benelux and developed by Jay Mahmood, and this made me a more all-around, focused stylist. In the salon I cut, color and style.
That’s really cool. Most folks don’t realize how much education goes into hairstyling. It’s great that you continue to learn and refine your skills. Out of curiosity, what type of hair extensions do you use on a regular basis?
I don’t work with any type of hair extensions.
Gotcha, I’m more of an all-natural gal myself and very rarely use clip-in hair extensions to add a pop of color to my dark brown locks, typically on Halloween. So I have to know, what styling tools are your go-to?
My go-to styling tools are my Olivia Garden round brushes and my Gamma Piu flat iron to create lovely locks.
Those are great brands. I know other A-list stylists who also love Olivia Garden brushes. Speaking of which, what products do you like to use on your clients?
I love Goldwell’s StyleSign products, they are just smooth and can give any look a soft and shiny finish. I love their Mellogoo Modelling Paste to create touchable texture and I can always count on my Big Finish Volumizing Hair Spray to keep everything in place.
I’ll have to give those products a try. Since we’re on the topic, do you have your own line of hair products?
I don’t have my own hair care line.
Well, now that you opened your salon, who’s to say what goodies the future holds. What beauty tip are you asked about the most?
Quite often, I get asked how to create a big messy bun or any other “quick” casual style.
I love big messy buns; they look great especially when done right. Do you have a favorite hair dye brand? Also, would you recommend drugstore hair dyes for touch-ups at home?
I’m in love with Goldwell, especially their pure pigments and Elumen. The way you can mix and match all of their shades gives me the ultimate feeling of color-freedom. I offer multiple touch-up services to my guests. I would not recommend any drugstore touch-up.
What is your number one hair care tip or warning?
My go-to hair care tip is to invest in a few good products, with a good base you can go a long way. Make sure you use the right shampoo and treatment for your hair. Be very kind to your hair. Don’t stress it, and always wear long hair in a loose bun while sleeping.
I really like that you mentioned how to protect your hair when sleeping, it’s an underrated step in proper hair maintenance. I was wondering, do you hold any certifications or awards?
As a matter of fact, I love to stay educated. I was once told I was like a sponge sucking up all the information I could get. I’m a Certified Master Colorist and Master Stylist trained by Goldwell Benelux. I don’t hold any awards yet.
Before I let you go, what can we expect to see in the future from you?
I just recently started my own salon so that’s my main focus right now. I hope to grow even more as a person while chasing my dreams. I will be creating more “free time” to focus more on creating and photographing more creative, freedom looks.
Cheers to that! Veronique, thank you for your time and best of luck with all the joys that come with being a salon owner. I’ll continue to follow along on Instagram and can’t wait to see what creative looks you come up with next!
